Eurocentrism : Re-view from Literature
In 1991, American movie called 'Robinhood :
Princes of Thieves' was made. It has some very interesting Eurocentric and
non-eurocentric garment. The movie begin, which the Kevin Costner acted of
Robinhood. The movie begin with the azan, dark jail Jerusalem with very cruel
characters areas hudud laws being applied, Robinhood himself was under threat is
hand of Chelt off. But the same time you have very interesting character by
named of Azeem, the muslim, an arab played by the famous African American actor
Morgan Freeman who was presented as a very civilized man and chivalrous man the
quality of chivalry (futuwah) who was honourable he was catologically savvy,
for example he have a portable telescope machine with out which he amazed the
English man who around him, not showing the civilizing technological
advancement of the muslims in those days.
Some interesting elements of an attempt to be counter to Eurocentric, but overall the film movie was euro-centric, because it still presented Azeem as an exception to muslims. Because Azeem himself was escaping punishment and invite who save by Robinhood. And therefore he agree to decided to repaid Robinhood by accompaning him to England and help him in there is. This is popular culture. New Euro-centrism as i said is kind of euro-centrism in which there inact or neglect of the non-european non western in term of Ideas. I want to suggest four ways in which knowledge can be counter Eurocentric or non euro-centric.
The first way is that it needs to be Epistemologically pluralistic. What I means is this, in modern knowledge particularly the sciences, natural sciences but also in the social sciences. Our methodological approach is districted to the so called scientific method to induction and deduction. This is odd with the classical tradition wether we are talking about medieval tradition or the classical greek tradition or classical Islamic tradition in which the scientific method induction and deduction are merely what what is collectively called demonstration is merely one mode of argumentation. Other more argumentation such as dialectics, rhetorics, poetics which were considered a valid means of arriving acknowledge, but this have been moreless expanse of the curriculum unless you have a philosophy student or a biografy student of literature. But, in classical tradition is all valid form of argumentation very form arriving acknowledge.
I mean just give an example, sociologist and economist study inductively or deductively through data collections, through publication of theories poverty in a village, anthropology may study poverty, using scientific method but the poets may describe the poverty in that village in a way that provide understanding through experience at neighbor to read of a point to feel or experience the world of people poverty. An artist on oil campus may paint the scene of poverty in the village and this are form of knowledge as valid so called scientific forms. And we find that in the works of historians, sociologist, anthropologist indeep we do find that there in genuity of multiplicity or the plurality of method arriving news.
